Recently, the Council of the European Union made a decision to authorize the formal signing of the China EU agreement on geographical indications. China's 100 geographical indications have been protected by the European Union, and three geographical indications, Nanjing salted duck, Pizhou garlic and Xinghua chive, have been listed in the list. Since Zhenjiang vinegar and Yancheng lobster have been protected by EU geographical indications, 5 geographical indications have been protected by EU in our province. The protection of geographical indications in the EU will lay a foundation for relevant geographical indication products to enter the EU market, further improve the popularity and competitiveness of geographical indication products in our province, and promote the high-quality development of regional characteristic economy.
It is understood that the China EU agreement on geographical indications is the first significant bilateral trade agreement signed between China and the European Union. The agreement will provide a high level of protection for 100 geographical indications from China and the European Union in each other's market. Four years after the agreement comes into effect, the scope of the agreement will be expanded to cover an additional 175 geographical indication names of both sides. With the continuous expansion of China's opening to the outside world, there will be more geographical indications products in our province going abroad to participate in international competition, and the role of geographical indications in promoting economic transformation and upgrading will be more prominent.
